Heritage Tour

  • 08h30 – Duration: 7.5 hours

Get an insight of the struggle endured by some South African activists to achieve political equality by tracing their footsteps in KwaZulu-Natal Province!

Visit Mahatma Gandhi House in Phoenix Settlement to see the restored home where he spent his earlier life, and from where his Sarvodaya (“progress of all” or “Universal uplift”) philosophy gained momentum.

The International Printing Press building from where he operated his banned newspaper is nearby, as is the museum dedicated to inter-cultural exchange between Gandhi, Shembe and the legacy of Satyagraha (“heritage of non-violence”).

A short visit to a Hari Krishna temple also offers an insight into the culture of some of KwaZulu-Natal’s Indian population.

Travel to Ohlange High School to see where Nelson Mandela voted for the very first time during South Africa’s first democratic elections and pay your respects at the grave site of Lange Dube, one of the founding members of the African National Congress (ANC) political party.
